Step by step: from beginner to internet marketer
A practical ten-step path, with what to do at each stage and how to know when to move on.
1. Decide what you want it for
Marketing your own business, getting a job, freelancing for local firms or building your own website are different goals. Write yours down in one sentence; it decides which skills you learn first.
2. Learn the fundamentals, not the tools
Every channel rests on the same basics: who the customer is, what problem they have, what you offer, and why they should believe you. Tools change; these don't.
3. Pick one channel to start
Choose the one closest to your goal (see types of internet marketing). Local business owner? Start with your Google Business Profile and website. Want a job? Search or paid social are common entry points.
4. Use free, reputable training
The platforms themselves publish free courses and documentation, for example Google Skillshop (free training), Meta Blueprint / Meta for Business: Learn and Google's SEO Starter Guide. Be wary of anyone selling expensive courses with income promises.
5. Build something real
A simple website, a blog, a social account for a club or a friend's business. A live project teaches far more than a certificate, and it becomes your portfolio.
6. Learn to measure
Set up analytics, decide what a "result" is (a call, an enquiry, a sale), and track it. Marketing without measurement is guesswork.
7. Learn the rules
In the UK, ads must follow the ASA: The CAP Code (non-broadcast advertising code), email marketing must follow PECR and personal data must be handled under data protection law. Knowing this makes you more employable, not less.
8. Add AI tools carefully
AI can speed up drafting, research and analysis. Check everything it produces; you are responsible for the result. See internet marketing in the age of AI.
9. Get feedback and a first client or role
Offer to help a local charity, club or business, ideally with a clear goal and a short timescale. Write up what you did and what happened, honestly, including what didn't work.
10. Keep learning
Platforms change constantly. Follow official product blogs and documentation rather than rumours.
